If you’re planning a move between Germany and Greece, you’re not alone. Every year, families, professionals, and businesses make this journey – whether to return to their roots, start fresh under the Mediterranean sun, or bring Greek life a little closer to northern Europe. At KAE International Movers, we understand the unique needs of clients relocating between these two countries, and one of the most efficient and cost-effective solutions we provide is groupage shipping.

Why Germany – Greece Moves Are Special

Germany and Greece may be part of the same European Union, but moving between them involves more than just loading a truck and hitting the road. Distances are long, routes often combine road and sea transport, and deliveries must sometimes reach remote islands or narrow city streets in Greece. This is where experience and local know-how make all the difference. With hubs in Germany and deep operational roots in Greece, KAE International Movers is ideally positioned to handle these complexities.

Just as importantly, we have built solid and long-standing partnerships with trusted moving agents and logistics providers in Germany. These relationships – developed over many years of successful collaboration – allow us to coordinate smoothly, ensure reliable consolidation, and guarantee timely departures. It’s this strong international network that makes our Germany – Greece groupage service so effective.

What Is Groupage Shipping – and Why Does It Work So Well Here?

Groupage Shipping is the process of combining shipments from different clients into one truck or container. Instead of paying for unused space, you only pay for the volume your belongings occupy. The benefits are clear:

Groupage Shipping is more affordable than booking a full load.

Groupage Shipping is eco-friendly, since space is used efficiently.

Groupage Shipping is flexible, with frequent departures that keep waiting times low.

For many of our clients moving between Germany and Greece – whether for personal or business reasons – groupage offers the perfect balance of efficiency and cost.

How KAE Makes Groupage Shipping Easy

At KAE, our process is designed to be as stress-free as possible. Once you request a quote, our team can arrange a survey of your belongings, provide professional packing, and handle all the necessary documentation. Your items are then consolidated at our network points in Germany, before being transported by road or sea to Greece.

Upon arrival, our team in Greece takes care of customs clearance (if when the shipment arrives via Sea freight) and final delivery – whether it’s to a city apartment, a countryside home, or even an island property. Because of our long experience with the Greek landscape, we’re also equipped to manage last-mile delivery challenges, like narrow roads or ferry transfers.

The Advantage of Cost and Timing

One of the biggest advantages of groupage shipping is the shared cost model. By splitting container or truck space with others, you save significantly compared to a full-load move. And thanks to our regular departures from Germany, supported by our strong local partners, your belongings reach Greece efficiently without long delays. Many of our clients also appreciate the transparency we provide – clear quotes, clear timelines, and no surprises.

Why Choose KAE International Movers?

After living in Greece for almost 30 years, I decided to take the plunge and move to the Netherlands. In this article, I’ll share my personal experience of moving to another country with my family, offering practical tips and insights that I’ve gathered along the way.

From the initial planning stages to unpacking in a new home, my real-life tips and lessons learned are based on everything that I experienced during my move. Whether you’re considering a move or already in the process, I hope that my story provides you with valuable advice.

Make a realistic timeline and start preparing early

Preparing for an international move involves a meticulous process that requires careful planning and a long timeline to ensure everything goes smoothly. Creating a detailed moving plan, including a moving checklist, helps you to keep track of tasks such as notifying utility companies, changing addresses, and researching movers.

Your moving checklist should be divided into tasks to complete before, during, and after the move. As soon as you know where and when you will be moving too, you create your plan.

Hire Professional Movers

Consider hiring a reputable moving company that specializes in international relocations. Ideally, you purchase a service including packing and unpacking at your new destination. Owner-packed moves and curbside deliveries are not recommended. While customers often choose these options for obvious economic reasons, they are also the least secure and going to a new country only adds to that.

Additionally, insurance companies typically do not provide coverage for any damages in such cases. Ultimately, the moving process is such an emotional one, you would want to choose only a professional company, with professional services and with a reputable insurance company.

Research moving companies and ask for quotes

When planning a move abroad, it’s crucial to start researching moving companies at least three to six months before your planned move date. This gives you ample time to gather quotes and compare. Not all moving companies are specialized in international moves. I would search for a company that has a local representation and experience in your destination.

Ask for detailed quotes, ensuring they include all potential costs such as packing, transportation, insurance, and any additional fees. When comparing their services, consider factors like their reputation, customer reviews, and the range of services they offer including the packing methods used .

As customers, when we read quotations from different companies, it’s easy to assume that all services are the same. However, we often overlook the finer details, such as the quality of packing materials used, the years of experience the crew brings, and how the goods will be handled during transit. These details are crucial for ensuring the best care for your belongings and minimizing the risk of damage along the way. Understanding these aspects highlights the difference in quality that some companies provide to deliver the best results.

For an international move, look for companies that provide comprehensive moving packages, including packing and unpacking services. Moving to another country can be overwhelming and you do not need to worry about your household.

Additionally, check if the movers offer insurance to protect your belongings during transit. Do you have a piano or fine art? Check if your company of choice can move these and if the crew have experience in these.

I chose KAE International because they had the best offer for the services that I was looking for including the moving of our piano. They also have experience with moves from Greece to the Netherlands and vice versa.

The Survey

During the survey, the moving company typically conducts a thorough assessment of your belongings and the logistics of your move. The surveyor will walk through your home to take an inventory of all the items you plan to move. They will note the size, weight, and quantity of your belongings, as well as any items that require special handling, such as fragile or valuable items.Based on the survey, the moving company will provide you with a detailed cost estimate. This estimate will include the cost of packing materials, labor, transportation, and any additional services you may require.

The surveyor will answer any questions you have about the moving process and address any concerns you might have. This is a good time to clarify any details and ensure you understand what to expect on moving day. I strongly advise you to make notes during the survey.

Remember what is discussed during your survey and what you need to prepare

As the actual moving date is often months away, it is difficult to remember what has been discussed during the survey. It is crucial that customers and moving companies have a clear understanding of their responsibilities. Remember that there is a gap between the survey date, the date of quote acceptance, and then the moving date .

Read your quote carefully and ask questions

The speed at which a move is arranged can sometimes lead to forgetting the details of what was discussed and agreed upon versus what is actually prepared by moving day. While we often have good intentions to prepare efficiently, life events can get in the way. As a result, even if we planned to pack certain items ourselves or fulfill specific agreements with the movers, it may not happen as expected.

This can also create challenges for the movers, as they prepare based on the initial agreements. If any changes arise that haven’t been communicated, it could disrupt the logistics, potentially resulting in additional costs or delays. It’s important to stay realistic and maintain open communication to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Carefully read your included services so you know what to expect on the day of the move and after the delivery is made. Make sure that you know exactly what you are paying for and keep your notes and quote with you to avoid any misunderstanding on the actual moving day.

Stay Organized

Keep track of all moving-related expenses, questions and notes and create a MOVING folder with moving check list including receipts and important documents. Keep a checklist of tasks and cross them off as you go.

Start decluttering early

Begin as early as you can with sorting and decluttering belongings, which can take weeks or even months, depending on the size of your household. Get rid of items you no longer need. This will make packing easier and reduce moving costs. If you are planning to sell some of your furniture, do that as early as possible and not at the last minute to avoid unnecessary stress.

I found the decluttering process psychologically challenging, especially with the kids. For someone who regularly cleans and organizes, I underestimated the emotional toll it would take, as this was my first and biggest household move. It was hard to part with certain items, especially for my youngest child. Be careful about cards, letters and other items that may seem unimportant. You may want to hold on to those. Since this process can be overwhelming, I advise to allow ample time.

Be prepared for unexpected events

We were planning to move in the summer so the children could enter the beginning of the school year from our new home. I had started researching schools a year in advance. Planning to make the final decision in December. However, an unexpected illness in October, involving several surgeries well into March, prevented calm preparation on a practical and psychological level. Although our move was successful, the unexpected turn of events added to extra stress and less preparation time.

This was especially the problem in the last week before moving day. I was not ready. Thankfully the moving company was flexible, I was able to change the date, the move coordinator was empathetic and patient, and we arranged for extra packing help. Although my experience was of an exceptional situation, it highlights the importance of starting early, having a flexible plan and being prepared for unexpected events.

Plan for Pets

If you have pets, research the regulations for their international transportation well in advance. Make sure they have the necessary vaccinations and paperwork. Although our pet is a small and easy to carry hamster, it was quite an adventure to take it from Greece to the Netherlands. Rodents are not allowed on planes thus our pet had to go by road. In our case, this meant that we had to book a pet cabin on the ferry boat from Greece to Italy, and arrange for a health check and an EU animal passport.

Some moving companies offer door-to-door pet moving services, picking up your furry friend from your home and delivering them safely to your new residence. These specialized movers also take care of customs and quarantine regulations as well as the paperwork and procedures necessary to transport an animal. These usually include vaccinations, microchipping, and health certificates, as well as the travel logistics, flights, and providing suitable travel crates. If you are transporting your pet yourself, make sure that you have a clear and early plan to avoid unnecessary stress for the animal.

Packing

It is crucial that your moving company uses international packing materials. The boxes that KAE provided me with to do some of my own packing are in no comparison to any of the usual boxes that you would pick up at the supermarket (something that I often read at the expat social media pages). Besides sturdy cardboard boxes, I was also provided with bubble wrap for our most precious items.

I let my kids help with packing their own belongings. This gave them a sense of control and helped to feel more comfortable with the move. Both my kids got one box that they could fill themselves with all their favorite toys, books, and comfort items. This box – the comfort box – should be easily accessible and the first thing unpacked in the new home.

My daughter is a little artist and her ceramic creations are beautiful but a nightmare to pack. They are fragile and often with tentacles, and other little details. I packed these myself in bubble wrap, tinned boxes and covered with clothes or other soft material. Clothes provide a soft layer that can absorb shocks and prevent breakage. It is also a sustainable or environmentally friendly way to pack reducing space and plastic.

Despite the challenges of packing such delicate items, especially with their tentacles and little details, I was impressed that everything arrived in one piece. We used groupage ( where items are transferred from one vehicle to another), and that can add another layer of complexity to the move. But my careful packing and the efficiency of the moving service ensured that her artwork survived the journey.

Take Photos

When my flatpacked extendable dining table arrived in the Netherlands, the local helpers asked me how the several pieces of the table were connected. I did not remember. My advice would be to take photos during the assembling process in case of more complicated furniture. This helps with the reassembly. Also, snap pictures of your electronics setup and valuable items. These are mandatory for insurance claims if needed.

Moving Day

Use a lanyard phone case and keep all your keys together. Especially if you have garage door keys and basement keys too. This way, you won’t misplace them on moving day, and you’ll have easy access to your essentials throughout the move. Put any dangling jewelry away to prevent it from getting caught or damaged. Needless to say that you wear the right clothes like sweatpants or athletic wear. You’ll be moving around a lot, so comfort is key.

Prepare Important Documents and stay organized

Keep all essential documents, such as passports, visas, and medical records, in a safe and accessible place. These will come with you when you travel to your new home. Keep valuables, jewelry, and other such items yourself.

The freezer and fridge

It’s a good idea to unplug your fridge before the movers arrive. Here are a few reasons why:

**Defrosting**: Unplugging the fridge at least 24 hours before the move allows it to defrost. This prevents water from leaking during the move.

**Cleaning**: It gives you a chance to clean the fridge and remove any food items. A clean fridge is easier to move and won’t attract pests.

**Safety**: Moving a fridge that’s still plugged in can be dangerous. Unplugging it ensures there are no electrical hazards.

Make sure to keep the fridge doors open to let it air out and dry completely before the move. This will help prevent any mold or mildew from forming.

And if you have a freezer, the process is the same. The freezer needs time to defrost. Unplug it at least 24 hours before the move to prevent water from leaking.

Moving the piano

My piano is very important to us and we were anxious to move it. Moving a piano requires the right techniques to ensure it arrives safely at its new location. That is why you should always hire professionals when you are relocating with a piano. They are heavy and delicate and only professional movers have the experience and equipment to handle them safely.

Inform your neighbors

On moving day, the moving company used a furniture elevator to get the furniture and boxes out of my house. This vehicle blocked the neighbors’ parking spaces for several hours. I realized too late that I could have informed them in advance. It is important to give your neighbors a heads-up to avoid any inconvenience for them in your communal spaces or on your street.

Does your moving team speak your language?

If you do not speak the local language well, make sure you have someone there to help you translate if necessary. Although I speak fluent Greek, the stress on moving day made me forget some crucial words… Thankfully the supervisor of my Greek moving team spoke fluent English.

Catering during the move

Get some plastic cups and/or plates. If you are going to offer drinks or food to the movers, make sure that there are some paper cups or plates. Your own mugs and glasses will be packed!

Protect Your Floors

You may want to consider laying down mats or old sheets to prevent damage from foot traffic.

Clothes

In my household, we have three fashion enthusiasts who adore beautiful clothes, suits, blazers, and dresses—and we have plenty of them. If there’s one thing I would do differently next time, it would be the packing of my clothes. I used suitcases and moving boxes but many clothes ended up wrinkled, and it took a lot of time to get them ironed and decent again.

Next time, I would ask the moving company about the options for special clothing boxes. KAE uses either flat clothing boxes or wardrobe boxes, depending on the type of shipment (airfreight, container freight) and the space you want to use.

Here are a few more tips for making the most of your space and keeping your clothes in good condition during the move:

Roll Your Clothes: Rolling clothes instead of folding them saves space and reduces wrinkles.

Layer Wisely: Place heavier items like jeans and sweaters at the bottom and lighter items on top.

Utilize Every Space: Fill shoes with socks or small items to maximize space.

Protect Delicate Items: Wrap delicate clothes in tissue paper or place them in garment bags to prevent damage.

Works of Art

My favorite artwork has an unusual shape: it is a long, thin metal stem with metal leaves and a ceramic flower. I was curious to see how the movers would pack this delicate piece and if it would arrive intact. To my relief, it did. This experience made me realize that packing is truly a science, requiring expertise in materials and transport. For this artwork, they used a combination of bubble wrap, cardboard, and plastic wrap.

Vacuum cleaner last

Each time the movers had a room packed up and empty, I vacuumed. Packing the vacuum cleaner last is a smart move for 3 reasons:

Final Clean-Up: Moving can create a lot of dust and debris. Having the vacuum cleaner handy allows you to give your old place a final clean before you leave, ensuring it’s in good condition for the next occupants.

Accidents Happen: During the moving process, things can get messy. Spills, dirt from shoes, and packing material can all create a mess that you’ll want to clean up before you go.

Quick Access: Once you arrive at your new home, you might need to do a quick clean before unpacking. Having the vacuum cleaner easily accessible means you can start fresh in your new space.

Pets and kids on moving day

Moving day can be chaotic and stressful, and having kids and pets around can add to the confusion. To have an efficient move, your pets and kids should stay elsewhere. With heavy furniture being moved and boxes everywhere, you do not want any injuries. The noise and activity of a move can be overwhelming for both children and pets and movers can work more efficiently without having to navigate around them. Finally, with your kids and pets in a calm environment, you’ll be able to focus on coordinating the move and ensuring everything goes smoothly.

Moving your car

We decided to drive the car ourselves to our new destination. That way, our relocation became a road trip adventure. However, this is exceptional and not possible if you are relocating over continents. When you choose your moving company, check what value for money transport solutions they offer for your vehicle(s).

For shipping your vehicle overseas or to and from Europe, KAE International offers the following transport methods:

**Container Transport:**

Securely load and strap your vehicle, with or without household goods, minimizing movement during transit. Economical for combined shipping.

**Roll on/Roll off (RoRo):**

Drive your vehicle onto the carrier at the port and off at the destination. Suitable for all vehicle sizes and popular for both manufacturers and individuals.

**Auto Car Carriers:**

Truck carriers for fast transport across EU countries with weekly coverage.

**Crates (for Motorbikes):**

Custom-sized crates protect motorbikes during transit, ideal for compact shipping.

Unpacking

“Unpacking is the art of rediscovering the familiar in a new place, turning a house into a home one box at a time.”

Check for damages

When your goods arrive at your address, the first thing that you will do is check for damages. Inspect your items and report any damages to the moving company immediately. You also make photos of everything.

Unpacking can be just as time-consuming as packing up. And while it is tempting to take your time, insurance companies are typically quite strict and require that any damages be reported to them within 3 to 7 days of delivery. That is why you start with the most important, the larger items, furniture, art and other valuables. For items such as books or toys, you can take your time.

Here are some expert tips for unpacking.

Start with Essentials: Unpack the essentials box first. This should include items you’ll need immediately, like toiletries, basic kitchen items, and bedding.

Room-by-Room Approach: Focus on one room at a time. This helps prevent feeling overwhelmed and allows you to see progress more clearly.

Label and Organize: Make sure all boxes are labeled by room and contents. This makes it easier to find what you need

Set Up Furniture First: Arrange your furniture before unpacking smaller items. This gives you a clear idea of the space and helps you decide where everything should go.

Declutter as You Go: Take this opportunity to get rid of items you no longer need. It will save space and make your new home feel more organize

Kids can unpack their own boxes in their new rooms

Helping Hands upon arrival

We arrived in the Netherlands to a furnished home, which allowed us to settle in comfortably before our household arrived from Greece. However, the arrival of numerous boxes and furniture was still a bit overwhelming. Having extra help beyond the moving company was invaluable. My family was there when the delivery was made, assisting with organizing, unpacking, and taking the boxes to the local recycling station. Their support not only made the process more efficient but also lifted my spirits, turning the experience into a fun and enjoyable one.

My conclusion is that moving is a long process and involves the careful execution of a plan that was set months before. Overall, a well-prepared move involves a significant investment of time, money and effort. A successful experience with the moving company is all about expectations. That is why you have to make sure that you know what you’ve arranged for. Read your quote carefully and be prepared for what you have paid for.

This experience has also taught me that moving involves not just physical preparation but also emotional readiness. Moving is, first and foremost, an emotional experience. Be prepared for that and take your time to digest it all. Yes, moving is stressful, but with these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to handle the chaos. Good luck with your move!

As the leaves change color and the air turns crisp, you might be planning a big change of your own – a move to a new home. In this article you will learn more about KAE ‘s approach to an Autumn Move

BENEFITS OF PLANNING A FALL MOVE

Fall moving can be a magical experience when you live in cooler temperatures. Autumn’s magical colors are the perfect backdrop for a fresh new start. If you live in a warmer part of the world, cooler autumn temperatures help you plan the perfect move. After the sweltering heat of summer, fall’s milder weather is a welcome relief for movers.

Fall is typically considered the off-peak season for moving companies. This means you might get better rates and have more flexibility with scheduling your move.

Moving in the fall allows you to settle into your new home before the holiday rush begins. You’ll have time to unpack, decorate, and maybe even host a housewarming party before the festive season kicks in?!

Autumn is also a good time for real estate: If you’re buying a new home, fall can be a great time to close deals. Sellers might be more motivated to finalize sales before the end of the year.

PREPARING YOUR MOVE IN AUTUMN

Plan Ahead: Start planning your move well in advance. Create a moving checklist and timeline to keep track of tasks and deadlines.

Check the Weather: Keep an eye on the weather forecast as your moving day approaches. Be prepared for any sudden changes and have contingency plans in place.

Dress Appropriately: Wear layers and comfortable clothing that you can easily adjust based on the weather.

Prepare Your New Home: Before moving in, ensure your new home is ready. Check that utilities are set up, and consider doing a deep clean before your belongings arrive.

Hire Professional Movers: Consider hiring professional movers to help with the heavy lifting and logistics. They have the experience and equipment to handle your move efficiently, even in less-than-ideal weather conditions.

If you are a collector of fine art, moving that special collection or individual item presents an extra set of concerns. Your valuable and irreplaceable antiques and artworks need to be moved safely and securely. Fine art requires careful preparation and handling in order to successfully make the journey to your new home. Are you looking to move your precious art objects or other high-value items? Read on because, in this article, we’ll give tips and advice regarding moving fine arts.

What is considered Fine Art?

Fine Arts are considered Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. The difference between art and fine art is that fine art cannot be used for commercial or practical purposes. This is the reason they are extra valuable and irreplaceable. And that is why only a specialized moving company should be commissioned to perform the moving and transport of fine arts.

When you are moving to another country, the definition of Fine Arts for customs and taxes depends on the relocation destination. In the case of Fine Art, there is a distinction between an original work of art and a collector’s object. Antiques, on the other hand, are objects older than 100 years old, which are not original works of art or object of collection.

Why an expert company for moving Fine Arts?

Sculptures and paintings are often heavy, delicate, and in non-typical shapes. Being a unique artwork, even small damage during a move could potentially ruin its value. That is why each item needs to be addressed individually in its own unique way and with a customized moving process. Besides a customized approach to every piece of art, an expert mover will work according to international methods to help you protect the value of your collection.

Fine Arts Shipping 3 Tips

Document the condition of your artwork before moving

Purchase moving insurance to specifically cover your fine art pieces in case of damage or loss during the move

Hire a specialized moving company

KAE International Movers: How we move fine arts

In our company, we have been working with paintings, sculptures, antiques, and museum artifacts for many years. In fact, we have 20 years of experience in moving works of art. Many museums, artists, and private art collectors have entrusted us with their artworks and prestigious collections.

These collaborations have helped us to specialize our company in moving artworks and high-value items. We also continuously invest in our team with training and specialization courses, enabling them to work according to the highest international standard.

Moving Paintings

Paintings can be wrapped or crated. A wooden crate is the safest method of transportation. Measurements are carefully taken, and special materials are taken into

consideration and are assessed uniquely for each item. The crate is then built around

the painting and is assembled on-site. The crate protects against damage, humidity, and any other potentially damaging situations. Adjustable transportation frames are also used for paintings. Paintings may need to be transported in a climate-controlled environment to protect the pigments.

Moving Sculptures

Moving a large, outdoor sculpture is very different from moving a small or large painting, yet each may be worth thousands of dollars. Generally, we strongly recommend that crating is the only right option for sculptures because they best protect them against damage.

Many people dream of moving to Greece. Who can resist the sunny weather, golden beaches, emerald waters, and picturesque villages on Mykonos or Santorini? In this post, we’ll take you to a lesser-known island of the Greek Archipelago. If you are looking into relocating to the Mediterranean, you may want to have a look at Thassos, Greece.

Thassos, Greece

Thassos island has become very popular over the past couple of years. Not only for a vacation but for permanent living too. Many people (most from Northern Europe) buy a second home in Thassos. They plan to spend their vacations in Thassos or prepare to live during some periods of their life on the island. Others even decide to stay in Thassos all year long. With incredible nature, endless beaches, beautiful turquoise waters, and perfect weather, Thassos is a true paradise for a second home.

An island near Thessaloniki

The island is especially attractive for people who want to live on a Greek island permanently, but do want the facilities of the mainland nearby. Because Thassos is only one hour away from all the essential services on the mainland and Thessaloniki. In fact, in Thassos one can live in an unspoiled and laid-back place all year round, without giving up the luxuries of the mainland.

The island of Thassos in Northern Greece

Thassos is ideal for families and for older people who are looking for a relaxed retirement. Kids can play safely on the sandy beaches of the island and the warm shallow sea is easily accessible for young and old. Add to this that there are no mega-resorts or noisy nightclubs on Thassos. Instead, you will find mountain villages and charming seaside resorts.

Moving to Thassos island

The beautiful villages of Thassos are surrounded by an amazing green landscape, each with its own architecture and characteristics. Theologos, Potamia, and Panagia are villages with characteristic stone architecture and elegant mansions. Here you’ll find houses with wooden balconies or walled yards with beautiful flower gardens. Further, in Limenas and Limenaria, you’ll see more neoclassical 3-storey houses. The coastal settlements of Thassos on the other hand, resemble a labyrinth of small streets with whitewashed facades with blue doors on different-sized houses.

If you are planning a removal, this beautiful island architecture may present its challenges. Some properties on Thassos are difficult to access. They have steep ascents, narrow roads, or tiny lanes. Some islands’ roads are in poor condition and too narrow for big trucks. To safely transport your household and previous family items to Thassos, it is important that you hire a local specialist who knows the island well and has expertise in removals to the Greek islands.

Renting a house on the Greek islands

If you are planning to settle on a Greek island, we recommend that you first rent a temporary home for a year. This is very important because you will get a better image of the island and experience it in all seasons. Some people only visit the Greek islands in the summer, when they are sunny and busy. In summer, everything is open, and the weather is always perfect. But Greek islands can be cold in the winter months, and some are nearly empty or close to their facilities. Top ⇑

Long-term versus short-term rentals

Keep in mind that a lot of long-term rentals on the Greek islands are being turned into Airbnb lately. Because landlords can make more money by just renting in summer to short-term lets. This has affected the rental market on the islands in terms of availability and price. In Athens, rental prices have also gone up since Airbnb entered the market. Top ⇑

Research prices

Before you start looking for a rental, you should set your budget and investigate your local area. You can research prices by reviewing property websites. It is advisable to engage the services of an estate agent, especially if you are not fluent in Greek. However, agency fees can be expensive, thus calculate them in your budget. Top ⇑

Real estate agents

To find apartment rentals in Greece, you can browse local sites or contact a real estate agent. If you decide on using a real estate agent, the agent will also negotiate the terms of the contract for you and manage the paperwork of the contract. Agents also might be putting time and effort into finding the right place for you to meet your needs. Note that you will need to pay extra fees and deposits when you rent through an agent. These are usually the equivalent of a month’s rent. Top ⇑

Websites for a rental home in Athens and Greece

If you decide to rent directly from a landlord, make sure that you research and negotiate the rent. Below are the most important websites for short-term and long-term rental homes in Athens and the rest of Greece.

The four main real estate portals, all of which offer rental properties in an English language interface:

Spitogatos

XE

Spiti 24

Tospitimou

Grekodom

For furnished apartments:

The Blue Ground

Top ⇑

Contacting the listing owner or agent

Whenever you find an apartment of your liking, you should call the owner/agent immediately. Do not send an email and wait for an answer. In Greece, it is wise to call right away. If they do not respond, send a text message and an email as a backup, and put a reminder on your phone to call them again in an hour. In Greece, calling is always the preferred form of communication and due to the limited supply of rental properties, good opportunities are instantly snapped up. Top ⇑

View the apartment or house

Once you have found a house or apartment, you can arrange a viewing. In the case of an apartment, check the general condition of the building including the entrance, the elevator, and the staircase. You can also ask questions about the neighbors and the building manager.

It is important that you get informed about the heating system and the air conditioning. Don’t forget to check out the neighborhood and consider services in the area such as supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, or public transport. You may want to see the area during the evening too, to get an idea of how safe it feels at night. Top ⇑

Rental contract

Before you sign your rental agreement, we recommend you engage the assistance of a translator if you are not fluent in Greek.

There are 2 types of contracts. There is the private agreement (ιδιωτικό συμφωνητικό μίσθωσης) that has all the details about your deposit, the house rules, duration, etc. These agreements can be useful in case of disagreements between two sides, and for evidence purposes in case you need to solve an issue through a court.

There is also the rent contract that is declared on e-taxis. This contract is the only official document recognized by Greek state institutions. This is the document that you need for your income tax, your residence permit, your bills, and your declaration of address. You always need to sign the contract for e-taxis. In addition, you can have a private agreement as well. Top ⇑

Details in the lease contract

In Greece, the minimum period for a long-term rental is three years. You may be able to negotiate a shorter term, but keep in mind that monthly rent will be less if you commit to a longer period. If you stay beyond the end of the initial lease period, it is assumed that the lease will continue indefinitely until the mutual agreement terminates it.

If bills are included in your monthly rent, this should be specified in your contract. The rental contract also outlines that the landlord is responsible for maintenance and repairs (apart from incidental damages). It will state that you will pay a deposit, usually the equivalent of two to three months’ rent, which is returnable at the end of your tenancy. It is wise to take an inventory when you move into your new home, which can then be reviewed when you move out. Any index-linked annual rent increases must be included in your contract as well. Top ⇑

Buying real estate in Greece is not hard, provided that you do your homework. In this article, we take you through the necessary steps and highlight the most important things to consider when buying a house in Greece.

Buying a house in Greece?

EU or Non-EU

Everyone can purchase property in Greece, yet EU citizens or residents are considerably more advantageous in the process. For EU citizens, it is easier to buy property in Greece. Non-EU residents may need to prove both their connections to Greece and their intent for property use. Their application goes through the Ministry of Defense which evaluates the submitted proof of intent and connection. Now that the UK has officially left the EU, buying property in Greece is a bit more difficult than before. You still have the right to buy and own property, but you may also face restrictions and a few more administrative processes. On the other hand, as a non-EU citizen, British buyers are now eligible for the Golden Visa scheme. To buy a home, every potential buyer needs a tax registration number (AFM) and bank account. Top ⇑

Golden Visa Scheme

Greece has a Golden Visa scheme that grants a five-year residency in return for investment in property. You’ll need to spend at least €250,000 on the house and meet other criteria such as having health insurance and no criminal record. Once granted, the holder of a Golden Visa and their immediate family members can legally live and work in Greece. Note that residency and work permits are connected in Greece. So if you do not qualify for the golden visa, and you are not a member of an EU country, you will need to secure your permit prior to purchasing a residential property.

The Greek government has announced that the Greek Golden Visa’s minimum investment is €250,000 at least until the 1st of July 2023. After that, the minimum amount will be increased to €5000,000. We will be updating this information. Top ⇑

Buying a house in Greece you need a Tax Registration Number

Buying a house in Greece requires a tax registration number (AFM) which is issued at the local tax office. This can be arranged in one day, and you do not need an appointment. In order to obtain the tax registration number, you need to bring your registration card or residence permit for Greece. Together with the tax registration number, the tax office will provide you with access codes to the national online tax system called “TAXIS”. All buyers will register whether the property is for residential or investment/rental purposes. The Greek government charges an annual residential property tax (ENFIA), which is calculated on this basis and must be declared on your tax return. Therefore, all property owners must be registered taxpayers and hold a Greek bank account. Top ⇑

Buying a house in Greece you need to Open a Bank account

Buyers need to open a Greek bank account. This account will be used to transfer all the funds required for the purchase (property price, notary fees, registration fees, etc.) To open a bank account, you’ll need to bring your passport and your tax registration number. Many banks will ask for additional documents, such as proof of address (a recent utility bill, for example), a work contract, or a reference letter from your previous bank. Top ⇑

Buying a house in Greece; Hire a lawyer is recommended

It is recommended to hire a local real estate agent to help you with the various steps of the purchasing process. Some also hire an engineer, who will establish the age and condition of the property and identify any specific zoning regulations. There are many properties in Greece in need of maintenance. Thus, it is always a good idea to inspect the real estate beforehand and make sure everything is okay. Further, it is mandatory that you hire a lawyer and a notary. We recommend that you find someone who speaks your language if you are not fluent in Greek. Top ⇑

Mortgage

After the Greek economic crisis, it has been very difficult to secure a mortgage through a Greek bank. Although this is changing, Greek banks do not give out a large amount of mortgages anymore. Generally, they don’t lend more than 75 percent of the property value. However, some might want you to set 50 percent of the total value. You may consider using a bank or lender from outside of Greece. You will need to provide documentation detailing your funding source to ensure the money is not taxed as income. Top ⇑

Costs involved in buying a house in Greece

There are several costs involved when buying a house in Greece. These are the fees for the real estate agent, legal fees, notary, and surveyor fees, as well as an initial deposit. By depositing a small amount, you reserve the property with the seller and affirm that you will buy the property. This deposit is usually 10 percent of the total price. You will then get your preliminary contract. Note that the payment of the deposit is not a legal guarantee of the sale. Once all the relevant documentation has been approved, the notary finalizes the transfer of ownership. Another thing to keep in mind is the exchange rate costs involved. Top ⇑

Real Estate Transfer Tax (Law 1587/1950) in Greece

When you buy a house in Greece, you become subject to taxation. There are two types of the real estate tax. The first one is the transfer tax or tax on the acquisition. Each transfer of real estate, which is not subject to VAT, is subject to real estate transfer tax. The real estate transfer tax is imposed at a rate of 3% on the taxable value of the property. Moreover, on the amount of main transfer tax is imposed an extra tax of 3% in favour of municipalities and communities. Top ⇑

Recurring Property Taxes in Greece

A real estate property tax known as the ENFIA is charged every year. The ENFIA consists of a principal tax imposed on each real estate property and a supplementary tax imposed on the total value of the property rights. More specifically, this tax is not imposed on the objective value of real estate property but is determined on the basis of various factors, according to the final registration of the property at the land registry. The rate of this property tax can be calculated via Taxisnet, the website of the Greek tax authority, using your personal passcodes. Top ⇑

Is It Easy To Buy A House In Greece?

You may feel overwhelmed with all the information. But buying real estate in Greece is not hard, provided that you do your homework and appoint a competent lawyer who can help you. It is important to become a taxpayer in Greece if you buy a house and that you open a bank account. After that, you can pay the stamp duty, which is around 3 percent of the value of the transaction, and all the fees involved. Finally, the acquisition has to be completed before a notary and registered at the local Land Registry. Top ⇑

Moving to Greece

Greece is a popular choice for people who are dreaming about a life in the sun. They are often retirees purchasing a (second) house, but also (young) professionals and families. Greece is a favorite because of its excellent climate and Mediterranean lifestyle. It is also close to the main European hubs and ports, thus easily accessible.

Location-wise, Greece has lots of choices: islands, mountainous regions, towns, and two big cities. In Athens, the atmosphere is hip and cosmopolitan. Here you will find a large international community and lots of ex-pats. Thessaloniki is a smaller city with a more traditional lifestyle. On the Greek islands, life is calmer and less hasty. That is why they are ideal for people who are looking to slow down.

Living expenses in Greece are lower than the European average. Rent, transport, and groceries are cheaper. Add to that a public (i.e. free) healthcare system. Finally, Greece has many opportunities for all sorts of sports and outdoor activities, as well as a rich cultural history. Not to mention the amazing beaches, crystal clear waters, and the great Greek food.

For whom is this guide?

This guide is for ex-pats, retirees, and returning residents or citizens of Greece. If you belong to one of these groups, you will find the information that you need in this guide. We will take the steps necessary to plan your move to Greece. From deciding on the location to tips for picking the right moving company.

Deciding on the location

If you are an expat being relocated by your employer, chances are that Athens is your destination. Digital nomads, retirees, and people buying a holiday home are free to choose their location. To find your Greek paradise, we advise you to plan a trip to Greece to explore the different areas. Life in the cities is very different from the Greek countryside. Some Greek islands are very quiet during the wintertime and have limited transport connections to the mainland. Others, such as Corfu, Crete, and Rhodes, have a very lively ex-pat and retiree community. You may also want to consider the internet connection quality and school options at your future location. We recommend you spend some time researching before you make your final decision.

5 Steps for planning your removal to Greece

Once you have decided on your location, it’s time to plan your removal to get your personal belongings to Greece. Here are the 5 steps for planning your move to Greece.

1. Choose a reliable moving company

The first step is to decide on a moving company. Reliability should be your main criteria, thus do your research carefully. Find out if the moving company is trustworthy by getting referrals and checking review websites such as Google Reviews or comments on social media. A great way to check the quality of the moving company you’re considering is checking their professional accreditations and industry memberships, such as Euromovers International.

Expect the highest level of customer care from your chosen moving company. Search for a responsible and professional business with a trusted customer care department and someone in charge of answering all your questions. Adaptability and flexibility must be key when addressing your concerns, and you should expect a fast and professional response to all your queries.

For Greece and the Greek island, search for a local expert who is experienced in dealing with regional challenges.

2. Insure your belongings

Ask your moving company about insurance and packing. It is recommended that you ensure all your goods while in transit or in storage in Greece. It is an important step to value your goods and to complete your inventory, ensuring your goods are well covered. In case of an international move, insure your personal goods or office effects for their full replacement value in the country to which you are moving. It is likely that the cost of repairs as well as a replacement will be higher abroad. If you do not insure them for the full replacement value, you will only be able to recover part of your loss from the insurers. It is important that you have as much written information about your high-value items as possible. The underwriters of your moving company may require proof of ownership and/or value of such items. We advise to photograph these items, print them out and add the signed prints to your inventory

3. Do you need storage?

If you move to an unfurnished place in Greece, you need to bring your furniture along and you may need to store them before you move into your new place. Not all moving companies have their own storage facilities. So consider storage in advance and ask if your moving company can provide it. If yes, you need to check the levels of security at the storage, the access, and climate-controlled conditions. Professional movers have the ability to store your household belongings in a climate-controlled and secure storage warehouse. You also want a secure storage location without unauthorized entry. These secure storage facilities have multiple levels of security such as video surveillance, locked gates, and on-site security personnel.

Renting out safe storage space, whether for the short or long term, is a service that KAE International Movers will arrange for you.

4. Budget the costs of moving to Greece

Costs for moving to Greece: international movers prices

Shipping your items to Greece depends on many factors, the most important are the volume and how quickly you want your belongings to get there.

Other aspects that can influence the costs are the floor level that you are moving from or going to, if you are going to pack things yourself and what the access conditions are at both origin or destination. You might even require a high-value item to be crated, such as a piano or a work of art. Other additional costs are temporary storage.

Method of transport

The choice of transport depends on what you want to take with you. These are the four common methods of transport: a) Air Transportation, b) Road Transportation, c) Ocean Freight, d) Rail Transportation. The volume will help you choose the method of transport and consequently the costs.

Small volume

For small volumes of goods, for instance, one pallet (120 cm L x 100 cm W x 200 cm H) and up to 25cbm, road freight is often the better option. We recommend this for people who require fast service. Road freight is also flexible and their are less transport documents required

Larger volumes of goods

For people or families who have larger volumes (25+ CBM), we often suggest sea freight.

However, you should always ask for quotes and compare. That way, you will be able to make the right decision in which transport method best suits you.

Time of delivery

Sometimes, people need more time to find a home and that can take a few months. In those cases we recommend the sea freight option. Because the transit time, beginning from the time the goods are packed up to the time the goods arrive at the port, could take approx. 25 – 30 days. Within this time frame, it gives families that extra time to look for a home. If the goods were shipped by road, they would arrive earlier, and the customer would have to pay the extra storage costs.

In some cases, people don’t mind waiting for the majority of their goods to arrive later, but they also need a few things that are essential to them which they would require sooner. In that case, think of a combination of both sea and road or even sea and air freight. This way, you get your essential items there either within 2-3 days (air freight) or within a week (road freight).

What do you need to move to Greece?

Depending on the shipments, whether originating from the EU or not, there are certain customs requirements involving documentation that is implemented on household goods or office effects. Your moving company will prepare the necessary documentation that is required to be submitted to customs authorities. It is your responsibility to have the paperwork stamped at a notary or a police station that bears witness to your authenticated signature, which allows the customs clearance process to proceed.

Importing your goods into Greece with a “Certificate of Repatriation”

What is a certificate of repatriation?

The Certificate of Repatriation is issued to persons (citizens of any European Union member State, Greek citizens or persons married to a Greek citizen) that are residents abroad and intend to reside permanently* in Greece, so that they are exempt from import tax on their personal belongings (i.e., household effects, car etc.). The persons must have been abroad for at least two years to be able to submit their request for the certificate.

*Permanent residence is the place where an individual is residing for at least 185 days in a twelve-month period and where he/she holds personal and professional bonds. Studying at a University or other school abroad does not make the country where one is studying one’s country of main residency.

In general, the necessary prerequisites for the issuance of the Certificate of Repatriation are:

No other similar Certificate has been issued in the past by any other Consular Authority in the name of the person applying or in the name of any member of that person’s family.

The person in whose name the Certificate is going to be issued, has been residing mainly abroad (185 days out of any 12-month period abroad, where he/she has strong personal and professional bonds for at least two consecutive twelve-month periods before the issue of the Certificate).

Personal effects and household goods (including vehicles) are imported duty-free providing that there is a Certificate of Repatriation. In case you are not eligible for a certificate of repatriation, taxes and duties apply for all non-EU shipments being imported to Greece. Further,

ALL ITEMS brought in must be re-exported, or customs duty will be assessed when leaving (applies to Diplomatic Shipments only)

For foreigners coming to work in Greece, VAT (Value Added Tax) is payable on all goods

If you are importing your goods into Greece with a “Certificate of Repatriation” which was issued to you by the Greek Consulate at origin, then it is required by law for you to be in Greece at the time the vessel arrives at the port. You also need to be present at the port while customs clearance is taking place.

The people required to be present at the port are the people whose names are mentioned on the Certificate of Repatriation (or at least one of those persons to be present, but who will bring along all other passports of those mentioned on the Certificate).

It is important that we receive the ORIGINAL certificate for customs clearance procedures. A copy of the Certificate should be sent to us for reviewing. We recommend you make a certified copy of the Certificate if you need to have a copy, as the Original Certificate is kept by the Customs authorities after clearance is completed. In most cases, the Certificate includes copies of utility bills and other documents that prove your absence from Greece – i.e. Your time in which you were abroad. In case this proof is NOT attached to your Certificate, please bring with you the following documentation:

Utility Bills such as Water, Electricity, Phone Bills that date back at least the past 2 years

Tax declarations that date back 2 years

Banking Statements that date back 2 years and anything else that can prove your time abroad.

Passport for Customer and spouse (previous passport if the current one is less than two years old)

Inventory, detailed and stamped by Greek Consulate in the country of origin, (must include make, model, and serial number of ALL APPLIANCES, the quality, and quantity, square feet, and colour of any woven floor covering in the shipment and auto, if any)

These beautiful Greek islands come with transport challenges. Many houses on the Greek islands are difficult to access – steep ascents, narrow roads and tiny lanes are very common. The roads on the Greek islands are often in bad condition and there are many narrow alleys in the villages. Did you know that some Greek islands do not even allow cars? On Hydra and Spetses for instance, trucks and vehicles are banned!

To transport your household and precious family items to the Greek islands, choose local specialists who know the industry and have worked with the Greek islands for many years. Due to the condition of the roads, trucks (including container trucks) often cannot easily reach the properties. For that reason, we work with special shuttle vehicles so that we can actually deliver at the door and all the way into the new property.

Important papers for living in Greece

Greece is a bureaucratic country. Therefore, take plenty of time to arrange your administrative matters. Applying for a tax number, your registration with the healthcare system, or setting up a phone line, most things take more time than you may be used to from your home country. Remember that you need to have personal documents, such as your birth certificate and diplomas, translated. Let’s look at the most important documents for your move to Greece.

Visa

The most important aspect of your stay in Greece is your visa. Research your eligibility and visa requirements well before you make the move.

EU citizens

Because Greece is part of the European Union, European citizens do not need a work permit if they stay for 3 months. For a stay longer than 3 months, you will need to register and apply for a residency permit.

Non-EU citizens

Non-EU citizens need to apply for a visa before their arrival in Greece. If you are from a country outside the EU you need to apply for your work and residence visa as soon as possible. A ‘third-country national is anyone who is moving to Greece from outside the EU. Since Brexit, British nationals also belong to that group. If you have a Schengen visa to visit Greece as a tourist, you can stay here for 90 days within each 180-day period.

Residency permit

Residency permit EU citizens

For EU citizens, the application for a residency permit is relatively easy. You will do this at the local police station with a set of necessary documents. EU citizens are obliged to get a residency permit if they stay longer than 3 months in Greece. If you don’t work, you will need to show proof of support by having 4,000 euros in a Greek bank account. If you are self-employed or have a work agreement, you can prove that you can support yourself with your contract or tax returns. You will get a short-term residency permit first. After five years, you can apply for a permanent residency permit.

Residency permits non-EU citizens

If you are not moving to Greece from the EU, you need to speak to the embassy in your home country to find out exactly what paperwork is needed and what your residency options are. These are the following: Golden Visa Route (with an investment of 250,000 Euro in property or stocks), if you are self-employed and have proof of 2,000 Euro income per month, Greek heritage route, proof of employment contract in Greece or via a spouse/partnership with Greek national).

A (second) home in Greece

If you move to Greece for work, your location will most likely be Athens, the Greek capital. Athens is the largest city in Greece and is divided into many districts and municipalities. To find your ideal place, you will need to research Athens and understand that each district and neighborhood has its own vibe and style. Make a list of the things that are important to you and visit the areas. Check transport or routes to the workplace, count the time each day, ask about internet connections in your area, accessibility to the center, (international) schools, etc. The Northern suburbs of Athens are very popular with the ex-pat community, as well as the south on the Athenian Riviera in Glyfada and Voula. In both regions, you will find international schools.

Rent a home

To find apartment rentals in Greece, you can browse local sites or contact a real estate agent. Note that you will need to pay extra fees and deposits when you rent through an agent. These are usually the equivalent of a month’s rent. If you decide to rent directly from a landlord, make sure that you research and negotiate the rent.

Buy a home

Buying property in Greece can be easy for some. While EU residents will run into almost no restrictions on purchasing property in Greece, non-EU residents may need to prove both their connections to the country and their intent for property use. To buy a home, everyone needs an AFM tax number and a Greek bank account.

Golden Visa Scheme

The Golden Visa scheme grants a five-year residency permit to foreigners investing in property in the country. You’ll need to spend at least €250,000 on your home, and meet other criteria such as having health insurance and no criminal record. Once granted, the holder of a Golden Visa and their immediate family members can legally live and work in Greece.

The Greek government has announced that the Greek Golden Visa’s minimum investment is €250,000 at least until the 1st of July 2023. After that, the minimum amount will be increased to €5000,000. We will be updating this information.

Buying property in Greece for UK citizens

Now that the UK has officially left the EU, buying property in Greece is a little more difficult than before. You still have the right to buy and own property, but you may also face restrictions and a few more administrative processes. On the other hand, as a non-EU citizen, British buyers are now eligible for the Golden Visa scheme.

In any case, and from whatever country you are moving to, the first step for buying a home in Greece should be hiring a Real Estate Attorney.

Working in Greece

If you are planning to look for work in Greece, you should know that Greece has a high unemployment rate, except for a few sectors that we will discuss below. Athens hosts the most international companies. These are often looking for ex-pats and international workers. Recent developments show that Athens has started to feature European call centers and customer services companies. The building- and shipping sector also offers employment opportunities for foreigners. In addition to these, Greece has a huge tourism sector with many job opportunities. Be aware that Greek salaries are low compared to the rest of Europe. Large enterprises and international companies generally pay more than smaller Greek employers and also offer better benefits. You can also consider starting your own business or working as a digital nomad.

Culture at the work floor

Greeks work long hours and don’t have a nine-to-five mentality. On the other hand, there is more time for a long lunch break. Some traditional Greek businesses have a siesta and are closed between 2 and 5. In that case, you should take into account that your working day can last until 9 o’clock in the evening. In Greece, there is a hierarchical structure in the workplace, where the manager is in charge and must be treated with great respect. As a result, there is less room in Greece for employees’ own input or initiative. Greeks, like most Mediterranean countries, also deal with the concept of time differently. Do you have a business meeting or do you want to close a business deal? that often involves a coffee session outside the door or a long lunch. Social contacts and social rules are important in business. If you are looking for work, networking and recommendation is crucial.

Moving your family to Greece

If you are moving with your family to Greece, you need to research the childcare and education options at your desired location. In Greece are several international schools (only in Thessaloniki and Athens) private schools (in the big cities and towns and on some islands) and public Greek schools (everywhere). State-run education is free, including tuition and textbooks. Most ex-pats choose an international education or private education for their children. Some private schools will follow the American or British curriculums with English-speaking programs, while others are regulated under the French and German education systems. Here you can find a list of international schools in Greece. Nurseries and pre-schools accept children from 2,5 years old. In case you need child care for younger kids or babies, it’s advised to arrange for child care at home. Nannies and babysitters are common in Greece. Here you can find more information about private nannies in mainland Greece and the Greek islands.

Practical matters for living in Greece

House bills

Electricity, water, heating, and Wi-Fi are the most important bills that you will have to deal with when living in Greece. If you are living in an apartment building, you will also receive a monthly bill for maintenance expenses. If you buy your own home, you will obtain electricity by signing up at the local DEI (ΔΕΗ Electricity provider) office. You will need your passport and AFM number to do that. The same applies to the local water company. Here you will also bring your meter number.

AFM Tax Number

To rent or buy a house, to apply for electricity, or to open a bank account, you require a tax number in Greece. Your personal tax number is called AFM/ ΑΦΜ in Greece. It is, therefore, significant to arrange your AFM as soon as you arrive in Greece.

TAXES

If you are going to work for a Greek employer, spend more than 6 months in Greece, or are self-employed, and you make money in Greece, you will need to pay taxes in Greece. Double taxation regulations between Greece and other countries prevent you from paying tax in two different places. Greek taxes for small businesses and the self-employed are relatively high. If you are going to pay taxes in Greece, it’s wise to hire a local accountant.

Bank account

If you are going to be working for a Greek employer, you’ll need to open a Greek bank account to receive your salary. It may also help you apply for residency. To open a Greek bank account, you’ll go to the bank in person with your passport and AFM. Whatever Greek bank you’ll choose, do check the conditions because Greek banks charge admin fees for international transfers and third-party ATM withdrawals.

AMKA number

Another important number to apply for is the AMKA social security number. You receive an AMKA number if you are going to be employed by a Greek company or claim Greek benefits. You do not need an AMKA if you are a retiree and receive your pension from another country.

EHIC card

European citizens can apply for an EHIC card. This is a free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries. Third-country nationals (including British nationals) are obliged to get private health insurance to apply for residency.

Note that the healthcare system in Greece is poor and does not cover everything. That is why it’s imperative that you find a comprehensive health insurance plan. The best is to contact a local insurance agent and compare different plans and prices.

Driving license

If you have a driving license from an EU or EEA state, you can use your license without any restrictions. Third-country nationals (including UK citizens) need to switch to a Greek driving license.

Greek phone number

Getting a Greek sim card is very easy. Just visit a phone provider company with your passport. The rates between the different phone providers in Greece are comparable. Depending on your needs, you can buy a monthly plan or choose a top-up card.

Set up Wi-Fi

Once you settle in your new home, you will be able to set up Wi-Fi. This may take a while, thus patience, as well as a portable, temporary router, is required. There are a wide variety of providers in Greece, with Forthnet being the main internet provider. WIND is another popular choice. Fiber broadband is available in some parts of Greece. Be aware that, generally speaking, the signals can be weaker on some islands.

Learn some Greek

It is wise to take a Greek language course before you leave. Greeks generally speak good English, but to really integrate into society and find work successfully, knowledge of the Greek language is indispensable. It is also important to be able to put a diploma or certificate of the Greek language on your CV before applying to Greek companies.

Moving to Greece during the corona pandemic

With amazing culture, endless beaches, outdoor activities and perfect weather, not to mention the healthy Mediterranean food, the Greek islands are offering the ultimate escape and perfect location for a second home.

Each of the Greek islands has its own distinguished and unique cultural and topographical identity. Its (ancient) culture, beautiful scenery of crystal clear waters and non-stop sunshine is what contributes to the everlasting happiness for people who decide to move to one of the Greek islands. Did you know that there are over 2,000 of them?!

Moving to the Greek islands

There can be several reasons to be moving to the Greek islands. Most people are from European countries who want to buy a second home to spend their vacations in Greece or to get prepared to live during some periods of their life in Greece.

Greek islands architecture

The unique physical landscape of the Greek islands has contributed to the famous Greek islands’ architecture. Most islands have beautiful castle-towns that belong to the flourishing medieval years, at a time where the locals lived in fear, from the pirates’ invasions. There you will see the typical two-story Venetian houses built one next to the other, fortresses and other medieval structures. A beautiful and worldwide famous sample is Little Venice in Mykonos. Visitors strolling through the traditional Cycladic villages are often given the impression of a labyrinth.

The numerous cobbled streets with the whitewashed facades and the different sized houses shining under the Aegean sun, compose unique images.

Greek island Removals

The beautiful Greek islands architecture can come with challenges. Many properties on the Greek islands are difficult to access – steep ascents, narrow roads and tiny lanes are very common. The roads on the Greek islands are often in bad condition and narrow. Did you know that some Greek islands do not even allow cars? Hydra and Spetses for instance, have banned trucks and vehicles all together!

To transport your household and previous family items to the Greek islands, choose for local specialists who know the industry and have worked with the Greek islands for many years.

The importance of using a removal company with local expertise

Kae International movers has years of experience in dealing with the Greek islands challenges and is well-equipped to access any property. Our teams not only are familiar with the logistics and road networks on the islands, they are also specialist in the ferry network connections, ferry boat transportation and local customs.

Due to the condition of the roads, trucks (including container trucks) often cannot easily reach the properties. For that reason, we work with shuttle vehicles so that we can actually deliver at the door and all the way into the new home.
