Whether you’re moving for work, lifestyle, or family reasons, the process can feel overwhelming: paperwork, customs rules, shipping logistics, schools, and settling in.

At KAE International Movers, we’ve helped families and companies relocate for decades. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know — from customs rules to family life — plus provide a handy FAQ section that answers the most common questions about moving to Italy.

1. Customs & Import Rules

When relocating household goods to Italy, the process differs depending on whether you’re moving from within the EU or from outside the EU.

From within the EU:

Moves between EU member states are generally simpler, as no customs duties or import taxes apply. Your belongings can travel freely across borders, though a clear and itemized inventory is still required. Standard documentation includes a valid ID or passport, proof of residence in Italy, and your Italian tax code (codice fiscale).

From outside the EU:

Shipments arriving from non-EU countries are subject to Italian customs clearance and import regulations. In addition to the standard ID and codice fiscale, you’ll need supporting documents such as your residence permit (if staying longer than 90 days), proof of transfer of residence, and a detailed inventory listing all goods with estimated values. Some items, such as alcohol, tobacco, certain foods, and firearms are restricted or require special permits. Vehicles can be imported but must be registered in Italy within 12 months of arrival.

KAE takes care of the entire customs process on your behalf, ensuring all documents are correctly prepared and your shipment clears smoothly without unexpected fees or delays.

2. Shipping Logistics

Transit times and shipping methods vary depending on where you’re moving from.

From the EU:

Most household shipments travel by road freight, typically arriving within 3 – 10 days depending on distance and service type. This option offers flexibility and cost-efficiency for both full and shared loads.

From outside the EU:

International shipments are usually handled via sea or air freight. Sea freight takes around 4 – 8 weeks depending on origin and port schedules, ideal for large household volumes. Air freight is faster (around 1 – 2 weeks) but comes at a higher cost.

KAE provides fully managed door-to-door services: collection at origin, transport, customs clearance, and final delivery to your new home in Italy. Comprehensive insurance coverage is available for added security throughout the journey.

3. Housing & Neighborhoods

Finding the right home is key to settling in.

Renting vs. buying: Renting is common for expats; contracts often run 1–4 years.

Popular expat areas: Rome, Milan, Florence, Bologna, Turin, and increasingly southern Italy (Naples, Bari).

Utilities: Electricity, gas, and internet require local contracts — which can take time to set up.

Family & Children

Italy is family-friendly, but relocating with children requires planning.

Schools: Options include international schools (in English or bilingual) and public schools (Italian curriculum).

Childcare: Nursery (asilo nido) available from age 3 months, but spaces can be competitive.

Healthcare: Expats can register with the public system (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale – SSN) once they have residence; private insurance is also widely used.

Corporate Moves

Italy is a major hub for multinational companies, particularly in Milan, Rome, and Turin. KAE manages entire corporate moves — from IT equipment to confidential files.

CSC INTERNATIONAL (Event Services):

“Kae International assisted CSC International with the relocation of executive and management staff from Athens Greece, to Torino Italy and to Salt Lake city in the USA. Their assistance comprised an door-to-door service of packing, transporting and storing household goods, personal effects and computer equipment of approx. 100 cubic meters. The service provided by Kae International was timely and professional. I have no hesitation in recommending them to Kae International’s prospective clients.”

Brad Kenworthy / Director, Business Administration

Seasonal Planning

Timing your move can make all the difference.

Summer: Peak moving season, higher demand and prices.

Winter: Easier to book and less expensive, though weather may delay shipping.

School-year relocations: Families often move in late summer to align with September school starts.

Cultural Tips

Adjusting to Italian life takes patience — but it’s part of the adventure.

Expect bureaucracy: paperwork is part of daily life.

Learn a few Italian basics: it helps with integration.

Embrace the lifestyle: slower pace, family-first culture, and strong regional traditions.

At KAE International Movers, we take great pride in supporting the institutions that shape Europe’s future. Recently, we had the honor of working with the European Parliament (Parlement Européen) for the delivery and installation of office equipment at their new premises on Amalias Street, just steps from historic Syntagma Square in Athens, Greece.

A Diplomatic-Grade Relocation

This move required precision, security, and discretion. From logistics planning in Germany to safe and timely delivery in Athens, our experienced team managed every detail of the operation. While indoor photography was limited due to protocol, the location itself speaks volumes about the significance of this assignment.

Supporting the European Parliament (Parlement Européen) we,

Managed to secure transport of office equipment from Germany to Greece

Delivered and assembled all materials on-site at the new location

Ensured discreet handling in line with EU institutional standards

Adapted our logistics to the sensitive setting near the Parliament and National Garden

This project is another example of our dedication to institutional moving in Athens and the broader EU region.

Thank You for the Trust

We’re honored by the European Parliament’s trust and positive feedback. With each diplomatic or institutional project, we reaffirm our mission: to provide exceptional moving services to those who serve on the international stage.

A candid look into the types of customers, moving companies deal with.

Every day, in the world of moving, we meet people from all walks of life — different cultures, different temperaments, different expectations. Some customers are a dream. Others… well, let’s just say, they leave a lasting impression for all the wrong reasons.

Whether you’re moving locally or across continents, how you approach the process — and how you treat your movers — has a huge impact on how things unfold.

In this article, we shine a light on the many types of customers we deal with in the moving industry: the organized, the overwhelmed, the entitled, the vanishing acts — even the lovable ones. The aim isn’t to call anyone out (okay, maybe just a little), but to offer some insight, laughs, and self-awareness. Because the truth is: if you recognize yourself in one of these, you’re not alone — and that’s the first step toward a better moving experience for everyone.

It all starts with the first contact

Before we lift a single box or tape a single carton, we speak to customers by email, phone, or through a website inquiry. And trust us — you can tell a lot from that very first interaction. How a customer behaves in the early stages often sets the tone for the entire relationship.

Here’s what we typically see:

The Prepared Planner sends a clear, detailed list and asks thoughtful questions. They’re polite, realistic, and responsive. They make quoting easy — and usually get priority attention because we know they’re serious.

The Scrambler calls in a panic: “I need to move tomorrow. Can you help?!” Their inventory list is “just a few things,” which turns out to be a full three-bedroom house. They mean well, but the chaos begins before the truck even rolls out.

The Control Freak often sends an intense email with ten bullet points and five follow-ups within the hour. They want to know exactly how each item will be packed, in what order, by whom, and at what time. Helpful? Sometimes. Overwhelming? Usually.

The Ghost fills out the online form… then vanishes into thin air. No email replies, no returned calls. Then two weeks later: “Hey, can you still move me tomorrow?”

The Bargain Hunter jumps straight to price. “What’s your cheapest rate?” No name, no details, no hello. They send competitor quotes like they’re playing poker. They’ll even request for extra services saying things like “Will you throw in a free piano move? What they forget? You get what you pay for — and we’d rather win customers with quality, not a race to the bottom.

The Withholder gives as little info as possible. “It’s just some boxes,” they say, while dodging any questions about volume, access, or what “some” really means. We’re left guessing, and guessing is not a great way to run a move.

The VIP may open with “I’m very busy, so I expect this to be handled efficiently.” They name-drop, rush the conversation, and sometimes act like we’re lucky to have their business. Not the best way to start a working relationship.

The Cultural Ambassador is often kind and curious, but sometimes unsure about how things work. Language barriers or unfamiliar customs can create confusion — unless both sides make the effort to understand each other early on.

The Grateful Giver is friendly, human, and respectful. “Thanks for your time!” and “I know this is a big job — just want to make sure I’m doing it right.” That attitude alone makes everything easier — and earns them five stars in our eyes before we’ve even met. You remind us why we provide moving services.

The Bully shows signs early: rude emails, snappy tone, aggressive demands. We’ve learned to spot the red flags — and sometimes, for everyone’s sake, we just politely decline.

The Repeat Client checks in like an old friend. “Hi, it’s us again! Can we book you for our next move?” They’re confident, clear, and respectful — because they’ve been through it before and trust the process. They usually need less convincing and more confirming. Honestly, hearing from them makes our day.

The Royal usually says very little, assuming everything will “just be taken care of.” They don’t read the service details and assume movers will pack, disassemble, reassemble, organize, and maybe even hang their art — without saying a word.

So here’s the takeaway: The move starts the moment you reach out. Your tone, clarity, and attitude in that first conversation will shape how the process unfolds — and how much your movers are able (and willing) to help you.

Now that we’ve set the scene, let’s meet the cast…

They send their inventory on time, label their boxes, reply to emails faster than we can read them, and even have snacks packed for moving day. They don’t expect the impossible — and as a result, get the best possible outcome. We love you. The world loves you. Even the truck loves you!

Why it helps

They allow us to do our job efficiently. There are no surprises, no frantic last-minute packing marathons. Everyone’s on the same page.

So… What Type of Customer Are You?

Did you recognize yourself? Maybe in more than one? That’s okay — the goal here isn’t guilt. It’s awareness.

A successful move starts with a conversation — and continues with communication, preparation, and mutual respect. Whether you’re a planner, a procrastinator, or somewhere in between, there’s always room to be better.

And here’s the good news: we’re doing our part to help you avoid those negative outcomes — the delays, the surprises, the stress. Every quote we send is detailed, transparent, and tailored to your specific move. We don’t cut corners, and we don’t leave you guessing.

All we ask? Take 10 minutes to read the quote. Just 10. It’s the most valuable time you’ll spend in the entire process. We’ll also follow up — not to push, but to walk you through it, answer your questions, and make sure everything is clear. That conversation might be the difference between a stressful move and a seamless one.

We’re here to make this easy, but we can’t do it alone. If you bring your honesty, your clarity, and your time — we’ll bring the experience, the muscle, and the plan.

Let’s Make Your Next Move a Good One

Planning a move? Think about what kind of customer you want to be.
Already moved? Be honest — how was your first contact?
Want a smooth, stress-free experience? Start by being the kind of customer you’d want to work with.

After living in Greece for almost 30 years, I decided to take the plunge and move to the Netherlands. In this article, I’ll share my personal experience of moving to another country with my family, offering practical tips and insights that I’ve gathered along the way.

From the initial planning stages to unpacking in a new home, my real-life tips and lessons learned are based on everything that I experienced during my move. Whether you’re considering a move or already in the process, I hope that my story provides you with valuable advice.

Make a realistic timeline and start preparing early

Preparing for an international move involves a meticulous process that requires careful planning and a long timeline to ensure everything goes smoothly. Creating a detailed moving plan, including a moving checklist, helps you to keep track of tasks such as notifying utility companies, changing addresses, and researching movers.

Your moving checklist should be divided into tasks to complete before, during, and after the move. As soon as you know where and when you will be moving too, you create your plan.

Hire Professional Movers

Consider hiring a reputable moving company that specializes in international relocations. Ideally, you purchase a service including packing and unpacking at your new destination. Owner-packed moves and curbside deliveries are not recommended. While customers often choose these options for obvious economic reasons, they are also the least secure and going to a new country only adds to that.

Additionally, insurance companies typically do not provide coverage for any damages in such cases. Ultimately, the moving process is such an emotional one, you would want to choose only a professional company, with professional services and with a reputable insurance company.

Research moving companies and ask for quotes

When planning a move abroad, it’s crucial to start researching moving companies at least three to six months before your planned move date. This gives you ample time to gather quotes and compare. Not all moving companies are specialized in international moves. I would search for a company that has a local representation and experience in your destination.

Ask for detailed quotes, ensuring they include all potential costs such as packing, transportation, insurance, and any additional fees. When comparing their services, consider factors like their reputation, customer reviews, and the range of services they offer including the packing methods used .

As customers, when we read quotations from different companies, it’s easy to assume that all services are the same. However, we often overlook the finer details, such as the quality of packing materials used, the years of experience the crew brings, and how the goods will be handled during transit. These details are crucial for ensuring the best care for your belongings and minimizing the risk of damage along the way. Understanding these aspects highlights the difference in quality that some companies provide to deliver the best results.

For an international move, look for companies that provide comprehensive moving packages, including packing and unpacking services. Moving to another country can be overwhelming and you do not need to worry about your household.

Additionally, check if the movers offer insurance to protect your belongings during transit. Do you have a piano or fine art? Check if your company of choice can move these and if the crew have experience in these.

I chose KAE International because they had the best offer for the services that I was looking for including the moving of our piano. They also have experience with moves from Greece to the Netherlands and vice versa.

The Survey

During the survey, the moving company typically conducts a thorough assessment of your belongings and the logistics of your move. The surveyor will walk through your home to take an inventory of all the items you plan to move. They will note the size, weight, and quantity of your belongings, as well as any items that require special handling, such as fragile or valuable items.Based on the survey, the moving company will provide you with a detailed cost estimate. This estimate will include the cost of packing materials, labor, transportation, and any additional services you may require.

The surveyor will answer any questions you have about the moving process and address any concerns you might have. This is a good time to clarify any details and ensure you understand what to expect on moving day. I strongly advise you to make notes during the survey.

Remember what is discussed during your survey and what you need to prepare

As the actual moving date is often months away, it is difficult to remember what has been discussed during the survey. It is crucial that customers and moving companies have a clear understanding of their responsibilities. Remember that there is a gap between the survey date, the date of quote acceptance, and then the moving date .

The speed at which a move is arranged can sometimes lead to forgetting the details of what was discussed and agreed upon versus what is actually prepared by moving day. While we often have good intentions to prepare efficiently, life events can get in the way. As a result, even if we planned to pack certain items ourselves or fulfill specific agreements with the movers, it may not happen as expected.

This can also create challenges for the movers, as they prepare based on the initial agreements. If any changes arise that haven’t been communicated, it could disrupt the logistics, potentially resulting in additional costs or delays. It’s important to stay realistic and maintain open communication to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Carefully read your included services so you know what to expect on the day of the move and after the delivery is made. Make sure that you know exactly what you are paying for and keep your notes and quote with you to avoid any misunderstanding on the actual moving day.

Stay Organized

Keep track of all moving-related expenses, questions and notes and create a MOVING folder with moving check list including receipts and important documents. Keep a checklist of tasks and cross them off as you go.

Start decluttering early

Begin as early as you can with sorting and decluttering belongings, which can take weeks or even months, depending on the size of your household. Get rid of items you no longer need. This will make packing easier and reduce moving costs. If you are planning to sell some of your furniture, do that as early as possible and not at the last minute to avoid unnecessary stress.

I found the decluttering process psychologically challenging, especially with the kids. For someone who regularly cleans and organizes, I underestimated the emotional toll it would take, as this was my first and biggest household move. It was hard to part with certain items, especially for my youngest child. Be careful about cards, letters and other items that may seem unimportant. You may want to hold on to those. Since this process can be overwhelming, I advise to allow ample time.

Be prepared for unexpected events

We were planning to move in the summer so the children could enter the beginning of the school year from our new home. I had started researching schools a year in advance. Planning to make the final decision in December. However, an unexpected illness in October, involving several surgeries well into March, prevented calm preparation on a practical and psychological level. Although our move was successful, the unexpected turn of events added to extra stress and less preparation time.

This was especially the problem in the last week before moving day. I was not ready. Thankfully the moving company was flexible, I was able to change the date, the move coordinator was empathetic and patient, and we arranged for extra packing help. Although my experience was of an exceptional situation, it highlights the importance of starting early, having a flexible plan and being prepared for unexpected events.

Plan for Pets

If you have pets, research the regulations for their international transportation well in advance. Make sure they have the necessary vaccinations and paperwork. Although our pet is a small and easy to carry hamster, it was quite an adventure to take it from Greece to the Netherlands. Rodents are not allowed on planes thus our pet had to go by road. In our case, this meant that we had to book a pet cabin on the ferry boat from Greece to Italy, and arrange for a health check and an EU animal passport.

Some moving companies offer door-to-door pet moving services, picking up your furry friend from your home and delivering them safely to your new residence. These specialized movers also take care of customs and quarantine regulations as well as the paperwork and procedures necessary to transport an animal. These usually include vaccinations, microchipping, and health certificates, as well as the travel logistics, flights, and providing suitable travel crates. If you are transporting your pet yourself, make sure that you have a clear and early plan to avoid unnecessary stress for the animal.

Packing

It is crucial that your moving company uses international packing materials. The boxes that KAE provided me with to do some of my own packing are in no comparison to any of the usual boxes that you would pick up at the supermarket (something that I often read at the expat social media pages). Besides sturdy cardboard boxes, I was also provided with bubble wrap for our most precious items.

I let my kids help with packing their own belongings. This gave them a sense of control and helped to feel more comfortable with the move. Both my kids got one box that they could fill themselves with all their favorite toys, books, and comfort items. This box – the comfort box – should be easily accessible and the first thing unpacked in the new home.

My daughter is a little artist and her ceramic creations are beautiful but a nightmare to pack. They are fragile and often with tentacles, and other little details. I packed these myself in bubble wrap, tinned boxes and covered with clothes or other soft material. Clothes provide a soft layer that can absorb shocks and prevent breakage. It is also a sustainable or environmentally friendly way to pack reducing space and plastic.

Despite the challenges of packing such delicate items, especially with their tentacles and little details, I was impressed that everything arrived in one piece. We used groupage ( where items are transferred from one vehicle to another), and that can add another layer of complexity to the move. But my careful packing and the efficiency of the moving service ensured that her artwork survived the journey.

Take Photos

When my flatpacked extendable dining table arrived in the Netherlands, the local helpers asked me how the several pieces of the table were connected. I did not remember. My advice would be to take photos during the assembling process in case of more complicated furniture. This helps with the reassembly. Also, snap pictures of your electronics setup and valuable items. These are mandatory for insurance claims if needed.

Moving Day

Use a lanyard phone case and keep all your keys together. Especially if you have garage door keys and basement keys too. This way, you won’t misplace them on moving day, and you’ll have easy access to your essentials throughout the move. Put any dangling jewelry away to prevent it from getting caught or damaged. Needless to say that you wear the right clothes like sweatpants or athletic wear. You’ll be moving around a lot, so comfort is key.

Prepare Important Documents and stay organized

Keep all essential documents, such as passports, visas, and medical records, in a safe and accessible place. These will come with you when you travel to your new home. Keep valuables, jewelry, and other such items yourself.

The freezer and fridge

It’s a good idea to unplug your fridge before the movers arrive. Here are a few reasons why:

**Defrosting**: Unplugging the fridge at least 24 hours before the move allows it to defrost. This prevents water from leaking during the move.

**Cleaning**: It gives you a chance to clean the fridge and remove any food items. A clean fridge is easier to move and won’t attract pests.

**Safety**: Moving a fridge that’s still plugged in can be dangerous. Unplugging it ensures there are no electrical hazards.

Make sure to keep the fridge doors open to let it air out and dry completely before the move. This will help prevent any mold or mildew from forming.

And if you have a freezer, the process is the same. The freezer needs time to defrost. Unplug it at least 24 hours before the move to prevent water from leaking.

Moving the piano

My piano is very important to us and we were anxious to move it. Moving a piano requires the right techniques to ensure it arrives safely at its new location. That is why you should always hire professionals when you are relocating with a piano. They are heavy and delicate and only professional movers have the experience and equipment to handle them safely.

Inform your neighbors

On moving day, the moving company used a furniture elevator to get the furniture and boxes out of my house. This vehicle blocked the neighbors’ parking spaces for several hours. I realized too late that I could have informed them in advance. It is important to give your neighbors a heads-up to avoid any inconvenience for them in your communal spaces or on your street.

Does your moving team speak your language?

If you do not speak the local language well, make sure you have someone there to help you translate if necessary. Although I speak fluent Greek, the stress on moving day made me forget some crucial words… Thankfully the supervisor of my Greek moving team spoke fluent English.

Catering during the move

Get some plastic cups and/or plates. If you are going to offer drinks or food to the movers, make sure that there are some paper cups or plates. Your own mugs and glasses will be packed!

Protect Your Floors

You may want to consider laying down mats or old sheets to prevent damage from foot traffic.

Clothes

In my household, we have three fashion enthusiasts who adore beautiful clothes, suits, blazers, and dresses—and we have plenty of them. If there’s one thing I would do differently next time, it would be the packing of my clothes. I used suitcases and moving boxes but many clothes ended up wrinkled, and it took a lot of time to get them ironed and decent again.

Next time, I would ask the moving company about the options for special clothing boxes. KAE uses either flat clothing boxes or wardrobe boxes, depending on the type of shipment (airfreight, container freight) and the space you want to use.

Here are a few more tips for making the most of your space and keeping your clothes in good condition during the move:

Roll Your Clothes: Rolling clothes instead of folding them saves space and reduces wrinkles.

Layer Wisely: Place heavier items like jeans and sweaters at the bottom and lighter items on top.

Utilize Every Space: Fill shoes with socks or small items to maximize space.

Protect Delicate Items: Wrap delicate clothes in tissue paper or place them in garment bags to prevent damage.

Works of Art

My favorite artwork has an unusual shape: it is a long, thin metal stem with metal leaves and a ceramic flower. I was curious to see how the movers would pack this delicate piece and if it would arrive intact. To my relief, it did. This experience made me realize that packing is truly a science, requiring expertise in materials and transport. For this artwork, they used a combination of bubble wrap, cardboard, and plastic wrap.

Vacuum cleaner last

Each time the movers had a room packed up and empty, I vacuumed. Packing the vacuum cleaner last is a smart move for 3 reasons:

Final Clean-Up: Moving can create a lot of dust and debris. Having the vacuum cleaner handy allows you to give your old place a final clean before you leave, ensuring it’s in good condition for the next occupants.

Accidents Happen: During the moving process, things can get messy. Spills, dirt from shoes, and packing material can all create a mess that you’ll want to clean up before you go.

Quick Access: Once you arrive at your new home, you might need to do a quick clean before unpacking. Having the vacuum cleaner easily accessible means you can start fresh in your new space.

Pets and kids on moving day

Moving day can be chaotic and stressful, and having kids and pets around can add to the confusion. To have an efficient move, your pets and kids should stay elsewhere. With heavy furniture being moved and boxes everywhere, you do not want any injuries. The noise and activity of a move can be overwhelming for both children and pets and movers can work more efficiently without having to navigate around them. Finally, with your kids and pets in a calm environment, you’ll be able to focus on coordinating the move and ensuring everything goes smoothly.

Moving your car

We decided to drive the car ourselves to our new destination. That way, our relocation became a road trip adventure. However, this is exceptional and not possible if you are relocating over continents. When you choose your moving company, check what value for money transport solutions they offer for your vehicle(s).

For shipping your vehicle overseas or to and from Europe, KAE International offers the following transport methods:

**Container Transport:**

Securely load and strap your vehicle, with or without household goods, minimizing movement during transit. Economical for combined shipping.

**Roll on/Roll off (RoRo):**

Unpacking

“Unpacking is the art of rediscovering the familiar in a new place, turning a house into a home one box at a time.”

Check for damages

When your goods arrive at your address, the first thing that you will do is check for damages. Inspect your items and report any damages to the moving company immediately. You also make photos of everything.

Unpacking can be just as time-consuming as packing up. And while it is tempting to take your time, insurance companies are typically quite strict and require that any damages be reported to them within 3 to 7 days of delivery. That is why you start with the most important, the larger items, furniture, art and other valuables. For items such as books or toys, you can take your time.

Here are some expert tips for unpacking.

Start with Essentials: Unpack the essentials box first. This should include items you’ll need immediately, like toiletries, basic kitchen items, and bedding.

Room-by-Room Approach: Focus on one room at a time. This helps prevent feeling overwhelmed and allows you to see progress more clearly.

Label and Organize: Make sure all boxes are labeled by room and contents. This makes it easier to find what you need

Set Up Furniture First: Arrange your furniture before unpacking smaller items. This gives you a clear idea of the space and helps you decide where everything should go.

Declutter as You Go: Take this opportunity to get rid of items you no longer need. It will save space and make your new home feel more organize

Kids can unpack their own boxes in their new rooms

Helping Hands upon arrival

We arrived in the Netherlands to a furnished home, which allowed us to settle in comfortably before our household arrived from Greece. However, the arrival of numerous boxes and furniture was still a bit overwhelming. Having extra help beyond the moving company was invaluable. My family was there when the delivery was made, assisting with organizing, unpacking, and taking the boxes to the local recycling station. Their support not only made the process more efficient but also lifted my spirits, turning the experience into a fun and enjoyable one.

My conclusion is that moving is a long process and involves the careful execution of a plan that was set months before. Overall, a well-prepared move involves a significant investment of time, money and effort. A successful experience with the moving company is all about expectations. That is why you have to make sure that you know what you’ve arranged for. Read your quote carefully and be prepared for what you have paid for.

This experience has also taught me that moving involves not just physical preparation but also emotional readiness. Moving is, first and foremost, an emotional experience. Be prepared for that and take your time to digest it all. Yes, moving is stressful, but with these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to handle the chaos. Good luck with your move!

But what makes our weekly routes truly special? They are groupage routes. This combined transport means that instead of paying for a whole container or truck, you only pay for the space your belongings occupy.

Introduction

The Euromovers Conference is an annual event that brings together leading professionals from the moving industry to discuss emerging trends, share insights, and foster collaboration. Here’s our experience from our participation at the Euromovers Conference held in Catania in May 2022.

Kae International Movers: A Global Presence

Kae International Movers made its mark at the Euromovers Conference. The company’s international staff ( from the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Greece), was fully represented at this prestigious event. It was not the first time we joined this prestigious event, in fact, Kae hasn’t missed any Eurmovers conference over many years.

Exploring the Latest Trends

The Euromovers Conference provided a platform for industry leaders to discuss the latest trends shaping the moving landscape. Kae International Movers actively participated in these discussions and gained valuable insights into emerging technologies, sustainable practices, and customer-centric solutions.

If you are a collector of fine art, moving that special collection or individual item presents an extra set of concerns. Your valuable and irreplaceable antiques and artworks need to be moved safely and securely. Fine art requires careful preparation and handling in order to successfully make the journey to your new home. Are you looking to move your precious art objects or other high-value items? Read on because, in this article, we’ll give tips and advice regarding moving fine arts.

What is considered Fine Art?

Fine Arts are considered Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture. The difference between art and fine art is that fine art cannot be used for commercial or practical purposes. This is the reason they are extra valuable and irreplaceable. And that is why only a specialized moving company should be commissioned to perform the moving and transport of fine arts.

When you are moving to another country, the definition of Fine Arts for customs and taxes depends on the relocation destination. In the case of Fine Art, there is a distinction between an original work of art and a collector’s object. Antiques, on the other hand, are objects older than 100 years old, which are not original works of art or object of collection.

Why an expert company for moving Fine Arts?

Sculptures and paintings are often heavy, delicate, and in non-typical shapes. Being a unique artwork, even small damage during a move could potentially ruin its value. That is why each item needs to be addressed individually in its own unique way and with a customized moving process. Besides a customized approach to every piece of art, an expert mover will work according to international methods to help you protect the value of your collection.

Fine Arts Shipping 3 Tips

Document the condition of your artwork before moving

Purchase moving insurance to specifically cover your fine art pieces in case of damage or loss during the move

Hire a specialized moving company

KAE International Movers: How we move fine arts

In our company, we have been working with paintings, sculptures, antiques, and museum artifacts for many years. In fact, we have 20 years of experience in moving works of art. Many museums, artists, and private art collectors have entrusted us with their artworks and prestigious collections.

These collaborations have helped us to specialize our company in moving artworks and high-value items. We also continuously invest in our team with training and specialization courses, enabling them to work according to the highest international standard.

Moving Paintings

Paintings can be wrapped or crated. A wooden crate is the safest method of transportation. Measurements are carefully taken, and special materials are taken into

consideration and are assessed uniquely for each item. The crate is then built around

the painting and is assembled on-site. The crate protects against damage, humidity, and any other potentially damaging situations. Adjustable transportation frames are also used for paintings. Paintings may need to be transported in a climate-controlled environment to protect the pigments.

Moving Sculptures

Moving a large, outdoor sculpture is very different from moving a small or large painting, yet each may be worth thousands of dollars. Generally, we strongly recommend that crating is the only right option for sculptures because they best protect them against damage.

An appropriate truck and lifting belts may also be needed to safely move your sculpture. In some cases, if your sculpture is too large and heavy, a crane or other professional equipment is used.

Who can resist the sunny weather, golden beaches, emerald waters, and picturesque villages on Mykonos or Santorini? In this post, we’ll take you to a lesser-known island of the Greek Archipelago. If you are looking into relocating to the Mediterranean, you may want to have a look at Thassos, Greece.

Thassos, Greece

Thassos island has become very popular over the past couple of years. Not only for a vacation but for permanent living too. Many people (most from Northern Europe) buy a second home in Thassos. They plan to spend their vacations in Thassos or prepare to live during some periods of their life on the island. Others even decide to stay in Thassos all year long. With incredible nature, endless beaches, beautiful turquoise waters, and perfect weather, Thassos is a true paradise for a second home.

An island near Thessaloniki

The island is especially attractive for people who want to live on a Greek island permanently, but do want the facilities of the mainland nearby. Because Thassos is only one hour away from all the essential services on the mainland and Thessaloniki. In fact, in Thassos one can live in an unspoiled and laid-back place all year round, without giving up the luxuries of the mainland.

The island of Thassos in Northern Greece

Thassos is ideal for families and for older people who are looking for a relaxed retirement. Kids can play safely on the sandy beaches of the island and the warm shallow sea is easily accessible for young and old. Add to this that there are no mega-resorts or noisy nightclubs on Thassos. Instead, you will find mountain villages and charming seaside resorts.

Moving to Thassos island

The beautiful villages of Thassos are surrounded by an amazing green landscape, each with its own architecture and characteristics. Theologos, Potamia, and Panagia are villages with characteristic stone architecture and elegant mansions. Here you’ll find houses with wooden balconies or walled yards with beautiful flower gardens. Further, in Limenas and Limenaria, you’ll see more neoclassical 3-storey houses. The coastal settlements of Thassos on the other hand, resemble a labyrinth of small streets with whitewashed facades with blue doors on different-sized houses.

If you are planning a removal, this beautiful island architecture may present its challenges. Some properties on Thassos are difficult to access. They have steep ascents, narrow roads, or tiny lanes. Some islands’ roads are in poor condition and too narrow for big trucks. To safely transport your household and previous family items to Thassos, it is important that you hire a local specialist who knows the island well and has expertise in removals to the Greek islands.

“Life is like a piano; the white keys represent happiness and the black show sadness. But as you go through life’s journey, remember that the black keys also create music.”

In this article, we’ll share our expertise on how to safely move a piano.

How to safely move a piano

For many people, their piano is more than just a musical instrument. The piano is part of their life and gives them joy, a way to express themselves or to forget the troubles of the day. A piano is also an elegant and classy part of the house. The piano can be a way to educate your kids or provide some great live entertainment. Pianos raise the status of just about any room they sit in. The shiny, black silhouette of a concert grand piano is about as iconic as it gets. A piano is the heart of the home and an expensive item, especially the grand piano.

When you are planning to move to a new home, it is important that you find an expert moving company that knows how to pack and transport your piano. At KAE, we have years of experience in moving pianos. We pride ourselves in many successful international and overseas grand piano moves.

Have a look at our video of a grand piano move, and let’s summarize the most important factors involved in moving your piano.

Piano Moving Cost Factors

Distance and destination:

Method of transportation:

Circumstances at the delivery address: Stairs, for instance, present one of the greatest challenges in moving a piano between homes. Other special challenges are sharp turns, narrow hallways, and doorways. That is why there can be an extra charge for these obstacles.

If your piano is moved to or from the upper story of a building and can’t be transported manually, a crane service might be needed to bring the piano into or out of the building.

Grand Piano versus Upright Piano

The expertise needed for safely moving your piano also depends on the type of piano. Grand pianos are the largest type and require a different packing method than the upright piano. To move the grand piano, we take it apart. We lower and secure the top of the piano’s lid, and we disassemble the piano pedals and legs. All these are carefully wrapped. Next is the piano’s lid, keys, and sides. Everything will be labeled and secured with packing tape.

As you can see, a piano can be moved, tilted, or rotated without doing damage. Damage to a piano only occurs when it is dropped or bumped, or when foreign objects are inside the piano when moving.

The upright piano, on the other hand, is a little less complicated. Upright pianos vary in terms of size, but they all have wooden soundboards that are mounted vertically, with strings that stretch downward and are struck (and muted) by horizontal hammers and dampers. Uprights, therefore, take up much less space, and we do not need to take the lid off. An average upright piano typically weighs between 226 and 362 kilos. It usually takes at least four people to move an upright piano.

Storage

If you are not moving into your new home directly, your piano may have to be stored in a climate-controlled facility. A professional moving company has its own warehouse where your piano can be stored safely.

https://kaeintlmovers.com/storage-services/

Tuning the piano after moving

Does the piano need tuning after moving? Yes, a piano should be tuned with each change of location, unless the move is within the same building. In most cases, a move from one room to another part of the home won’t cause problems unless the new room has a different climate.

Why use a professional piano mover?

If you are looking to safely move a piano, you need to contact an expert company. You may be trying to keep your move as cheap as possible but damaging your expensive piano in the process won’t help. Pianos are very heavy and expensive. They are not easy to move, and if you try moving your piano yourself, you are putting both the piano and yourself in danger.

Not only does a professional piano mover provide a team of people, but they also know exactly how to move the piano as a team together without damage or wasting time. Further, when you hire an experienced piano mover, they will provide professional techniques to ensure the piano and the workers remain safe. The moving company will also send the right truck and pack the piano for safe road or sea transport.

Eventually, the professional piano mover will save you money. Because if you damage the piano legs, pins, or strings, you will have to have it repaired and that will be costing you more than hiring a professional moving company.
